The Land Unknown

The Land Unknown is a 1957 science fiction film about a polar expedition mounted to explore an Antarctic jungle. The special effects are priceless, in a point-and-laugh kind of way.

I love the hat in this still shot from early in the movie:

Moria gives it 2 stars and says, "Alas, it befalls the same problem endemic to most 1950s dinosaur films – poor effects." TCM has information.

  2. We really liked the gigantic monitor lizard,
and the "Spider" plant, but the T-Rex was our favorite!

  3. I had to laugh at the dinosaurs and "special" effects. I'm still laughing. I'm not a hat person, but I DO like that one. Reminds me a bit of ones Jackie Kennedy Onasis wore, or at least many of the photos I've seen of her.

  4. It was pretty funny. Not only were the special effects poorly done but so was the plot cohesiveness. The actors gave it their best shot, though--LOL! :)

    1. The drama! I always get a kick out of the one woman on these expeditions fending off attention from the men. The generous hero and the repentant villain were good with each other. We may end up with a jungle in Antarctica before we're done. Perhaps we'll find dinosaur bones?

    2. I looked it up and Journey to the Center of the Earth was made two years later. Maybe they decided to do a better version of this idea--LOL! I haven't seen that one for many years but I bet that would be a hoot to watch now, too.

    4. Oh, it's been ages since I saw that! http://divers-and-sundry.blogspot.com/2010/02/journey-to-center-of-earth-1959.html I need to see if it's available online, because what I found then is gone. I did find it online and have updated that post.
