Destiny

Destiny, directed by Fritz Lang, is a 1921 silent about a young couple's encounter with a personified Death. Death gives the young woman 3 chances to save her lover, showing her 3 vignettes to see if she can defeat him in any of the stories, saying he'd be truly happy to be defeated in this. If she wins out over him she wins her lover's life. I thought this one was beautiful, with a more complex picture of Death than I sometimes see.

Moria says, "Fritz Lang’s images are impressive". Senses of Cinema says, "Destiny was Fritz Lang’s first international success and it had a crucial influence on many major filmmakers. ... Yet the film was not an immediate success. On its first release in Germany, it was a critical and commercial failure."
